A veteran Des Moines builder who specializes in downtown projects will lead the redevelopment of land in Sioux Falls that had been used for more than a century by railroads.

Planning and Development Services Director Jeff Eckhoff announced Wednesday that the city is partnering with Christensen Development of Des Moines to redevelop downtown railyard property that had been the subject of city interest for decades. The announcement caps a three-year relationship between the city and developer, as they waited for the market to be ready for another major downtown building project.

Eckhoff said the commencement of two major developments in the Steel District and Cherapa Place – along with inflationary costs in building materials – delayed the start of the railyard project on 8th Street across from Cherapa on the city’s East Bank.

Jake Christensen, president of the company, flanked Eckhoff during the announcement before speaking with reporters about the project. He said his company has plans for a five-story building with 56,000 square feet as the main structure. The ground floor will feature commercial activity, including the potential for dining, while the upper floors are slated for office space.
