A Pierre woman who bilked taxpayers out of more than a half million dollars has escaped a prison sentence.
The South Dakota Attorney General's Office announced Tuesday that Sharon Laraye Monson, 49, has been placed on probation by a Hughes County judge after being convicted earlier this summer of defrauding the South Dakota Medicaid Program of more than $588,000 in federal and state funds. As conditions of her sentence, she's been ordered to pay $500,000 in restitution to the South Dakota Department of Social Services.
