Public service logs provided by Register of Deeds reveal former Ziebach County commissioner served 46 years in office

Following publication of news that Lincoln County Commissioner Jim Schmidt would retire later this year with the distinction as longest-serving county commissioner in South Dakota history, records previously undiscovered by The Dakota Scout have clarified the 28-year Sioux Falls-area public service veteran is in fact among the longest-serving county commissioners in state history, but at least two other notable South Dakotans held their seats for longer periods of time.
