Water, other utility rates headed up in Sioux Falls

Council scales back late-fee charges as most utilities to see increases in 2024

After a pause on water rate increases for Sioux Falls users, they’re heading up again.

City councilors agreed to a package of rate increases Tuesday, the widest of which will hit water and sewage rates. Storm sewer and landfill rates were also included.

But city councilors rejected a proposal to increase late fees. Mayor Paul TenHaken’s administration sought to increase late fees to 5 percent on water bills, but the council rejected the proposal, opting to keep the rate at 1 percent or $1 – whichever is higher – for residential water users and 2 percent for nonresidential users.
