VIEWPOINT | Thune must keep protecting legacy of innovation, access
Guest column by Joni Ekstrum, South Dakota Biotech
Recently, Sen. John Thune received the prestigious Hatch Award, a recognition that honors his commitment to public service and bipartisanship, qualities that defined the late Sen. Orrin Hatch’s long and distinguished career. This award is a testament to Sen. Thune’s dedication to legislative excellence, and as we celebrate his achievement, we must also look forward to the continuation of Sen. Hatch’s legacy — particularly in the realm of intellectual property (IP) law and pharmaceutical innovation.
The connection between Sens. Thune and Hatch is profound. Together, they led the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, enacting the most sweeping reforms to our nation’s tax code in a generation and bringing much-needed relief to middle-income families. This landmark legislation is just one example of how Sen. Thune has worked alongside his colleagues to enact meaningful change that directly benefits Americans. As senator, he has authored laws to improve telehealth services, reduce internet taxes, and help small businesses engage in global commerce. These achievements demonstrate Sen. Thune’s commitment to fostering innovation and economic growth, making him a fitting recipient of the Hatch Award.
