VIEWPOINT | Tens of thousands suffer for Trump-led government shutdown

Another federal shutdown is here. This is not a political game, nor is it a partisan blame match, and certainly not another headline to scroll past. It’s a failure of leadership — plain and simple. And it’s hurting everyday South Dakotans.
The Republican caucus and Congressional candidates are calling this the “Schumer Shutdown.” It’s nonsense.
This is the “Subsidy Shutdown.” And the truth is Congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump chose this — by demanding the defunding of health insurance subsidies that help more than 53,000 South Dakotans afford coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
