VIEWPOINT | Sports betting is already here. The revenue should be too

Every year when the biggest game on the American sporting calendar concludes, millions of dollars have been wagered on outcomes, prop bets and margins of victory, yet much of that economic activity flows through online platforms that pay no taxes to our state or local communities.
Prediction market platforms operate much like sportsbooks, allowing users in South Dakota to wager on sports without our state’s oversight or contribution to our economy. Meanwhile South Dakota lawmakers are considering a resolution which would let voters decide whether to regulate online sports betting here at home and keep that revenue where it belongs.
