VIEWPOINT | South Dakota's failed corrections policies proving deadly
By Steve Haugaard, former South Dakota House Speaker
The record-breaking year of deaths within the South Dakota prison system again highlights the reality that the lack of a Corrections Policy has deadly consequences.
Over the past few years, the work of Corrections in South Dakota devolved into the singular focus on a building. The failure in our Corrections system has nothing to do with a building and everything to do with the lack of a Comprehensive Corrections Policy. As I explained several times during hearings on Corrections, spending an inordinate amount of money on a building will result in the building itself becoming the “corrections policy,” and that is what is now happening.
