South Dakota has never been a state to wait for the federal government to dictate our state’s values. We believe in limited government, individual liberty, strong families and religious liberty — the right to live according to our convictions, which is essential to our identity.

Recently, I reviewed the 2026 Religious Liberty in the States Index conducted by First Liberty Institute’s Center for Religion, Culture & Democracy. South Dakota ranked 36th. For a state that prides itself on freedom, we can do better.

In addition to my role as a legislator, I am a lawyer at Dhillon Law Group, where our work includes fighting to protect constitutional rights and religious liberties. I am also a fellow with Blackstone Legal Fellowship, a program that helped shape how I think about the Constitution, the role of government and the importance of protecting freedom of conscience, which is at the heart of religious liberty.
