VIEWPOINT | Neglecting child care, early learning more costly for South Dakota taxpayers

Every so often, a moment comes along that forces us to stop talking around a problem and finally confront it head on. The recent hearing held by the South Dakota Legislature’s Government Operations and Audit Committee was one of those moments. Lawmakers reviewed the performance of our K–12 public education system, and one finding stood out like a flashing red warning light — too many of our third graders cannot read at grade level.
