For nearly 50 years, Republicans have controlled South Dakota’s state government. During that time, our state has grown, our economy has changed and our communities have faced new challenges. But there is a question we should all be asking: Are things really getting better for the people who call South Dakota home?
Look at the challenges facing working families. Childcare is increasingly expensive and difficult to find. Housing costs are putting homeownership out of reach for too many young families. Schools are struggling to attract and retain teachers while trying to do more with limited resources. Rural hospitals and nursing homes are closing, health care costs continue to rise, and too many South Dakotans must travel long distances to receive basic care.
These aren’t Democratic or Republican problems. They are South Dakota problems. And after nearly five decades of one-party rule, we should expect more than excuses and promises. We should expect results.
