Lincoln County commissioners have had no shortage of debates in recent months, and the latest this week centered on whether taxpayers should help shoulder the cost of a veterans memorial at the new Justice Center.

The County Commission voted 4-1 to approve up to $26,950 for design, renderings, and a cost estimate for a future memorial at the Justice Center site. Commissioner Betty Otten cast the lone no vote.

The vote showcased a split over who should pay for a public tribute that was not part of the original Justice Center plan. Supporters said the county needed to act now before site work closed off options. Opponents said the memorial should be community funded, not taxpayer funded, and that commissioners were moving too fast without broader public input.
