Verla Jean was born on October 26, 1933 in Clark, South Dakota to parents Hjalmer and Elsie (Peterson) Hilmoe. She grew up in Bradley and graduated from Clark High School.
Verla married Jerome “Jerry” DesLauriers on June 11, 1953, in Clark. The couple moved to Huron in 1954 following the birth of their daughter, Cheryle. It was there they welcomed their two sons, Dan and Mark, and made their family home.
Once her children were all in school, Verla began a remarkable 50-year career with the Huron School District’s lunch program. She took great pride in her work and officially retired at the age of 80.
Verla had a love for gardening and shopping, and she was especially known for her delicious baking—her sugar cookies were a family favorite. She cherished time spent with friends and loved ones and was always up for a good visit. She and Jerry enjoyed many fishing trips together and spent countless happy days at their home in Whitlock.
Verla was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish and lived her life with warmth, kindness, and a deep love for her family.
She is survived by her children, Cheryle (Gus) Marcus of Huron and their children, John (Lynne) Marcus and Brad (Kaitlin Rigdon) Marcus; Dan (Diane) DesLauriers of Mitchell and their children Linda (Ross) Cimpl and Martin (Amy) DesLauriers; Mark (Staci) DesLauriers of Huron and their children Jessica (Kyle) Blake and Michael (Emily) DesLauriers; 9 great-grandchildren, Maggie and Baby on the way Marcus, Charlee and Porter Cimpl, Harvey and Presley DesLauriers, Grayson, Lilian and Casen DesLauriers; sister-in-law Arlene Sutton of Brookings; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2009, and her sister Dorothy (Gilman) Bjerke.
