Getting to a bus stop is no longer necessary to start a trip on the city of Sioux Falls’ public transit service.

Sioux Area Metro (SAM) and its new third-party manager on Monday began offering on-demand transit throughout the entire city, no longer limiting service to the system’s 12 fixed routes.

The expansion of SAM, expected to make public transit accessible to another 110,000 residents in the city, allows riders to be picked up where they are — or at a nearby intersection — before being driven either to a fixed route or directly to their destination.
