Trio accused in shooting now face federal racketeering charges alongside state case
Suspects in Jan. 4 incident at casino allegedly members of Gangster Disciples
A federal grand jury indicted them this month on charges of conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, attempted murder in aid of racketeering and aiding and abetting, assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering and various firearm charges.
The three were among several suspects who are implicated in the shooting of Gerson Mejia, who was in the casino at the Corner Pantry at 4209 West 12th St. just after midnight on Jan. 4.
According to court records, assailants entered the casino, smashed equipment and fired shots. Mejia, the target of the attack, was shot with a shotgun and pistol. The 32-year-old was transported to Avera Health with life-threatening injuries and went into immediate surgery. Mejia, whose nickname was Shabba in court documents, survived the attack.
