Time's up? South Dakota's medical marijuana watchdog faces dissolution
Legislative-led oversight panel created following 2020 passage of Initiated Measure 26 on chopping block
PIERRE — A layer of bureaucracy around South Dakota’s budding medical marijuana industry could be going away.
The state House voted 41-26 Monday to dissolve the Medical Marijuana Oversight Committee, advancing House Bill 1160 after months of high-profile and at times contentious hearings over the future of the voter-approved program.
“It’s time to disband this committee,” Rep. Tim Goodwin said of his proposal to repeal the advisory panel created to oversee medical marijuana policy in South Dakota after voters in 2020 approved medical cannabis at the polls.
