A longtime municipal power lineman in southeast South Dakota is asking the state to spare him an unexpected ultimatum: Move or find a new job.

The South Dakota Department of Labor’s Division of Labor and Management is weighing an employment dispute between the city of Vermillion and Brandon Steeneck, a rural Alcester hobby farmer who says he faces termination over his residence — a farmstead where he has lived for nearly his entire decade of city service.
