Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead made an unusual public foray into national politics during a press conference on the region’s growing problem with violent crime.

It came a week after Vice President Kamala Harris declared that the nation’s southern border with Mexico is secure. Milstead said that he was offended by Harris’ comment.

“The border,” he said, “is not secure.”

Milstead talked at length about the flood of methamphetamine and fentanyl making its way through the border via Mexican drug cartels. The fentanyl is coming from China, and Mexican cartels are using it to create counterfeit pills that can lead to fatal overdoses. Four out of every 10 counterfeit pills have enough fentanyl to be lethal, he said.

“You have a better chance with Russian roulette than you do with the fentanyl that’s being counterfeited,” he said.
