The Dakota Scout celebrates with 10,000 subscribers
From bold startup to statewide staple, we’re marking the milestone with gratitude — and giveaways.
10,000 AND GROWING — Thank you, South Dakota!
Today, we're humbled to share The Dakota Scout has eclipsed 10,000 subscribers, and even more excited to give some goodies back to a few lucky subscribers to commemorate the milestone.
More on what's up for grabs in a bit, but let us reflect a moment:
What started as a bold vision for longtime South Dakota journalists Jonathan Ellis and Joe Sneve has become a movement in local news.
On Sept. 1, 2022, The Dakota Scout launched with a simple but powerful mission: Deliver timely, fair and honest watchdog journalism that South Dakotans can trust. Ellis and Sneve believed South Dakota deserved a locally owned, independent newspaper — and thanks to YOU, that vision is 10,000 subscribers strong.
That’s 10,000 people who believe in local journalism, 10,000 people who care about transparency and accountability and 10,000 people who support a press that puts South Dakota first.
To our online subscribers — thank you for clicking, reading, sharing and subscribing.
To our advertisers — thank you for investing in local storytelling and small business.
To our loyal print readers — thank you for making us a part of your weekly routine.
To the proprietors that allow the newspaper to be picked up each week at more than 200 locations across the state— thank you for opening your doors to truly local journalism.
And to our all-star team — the heartbeat of this paper — Jen, Dan, Ryan, Nick, Alissa, Amy, Bobbi, Mike, Bob, Mark, Art, Christina, Tina, Leann, Kenneth, Hayden, Ian, Jay, Todd, Nichole. Dallas and Colette — this milestone belongs to you. They’ve helped build something real, something meaningful, and something that’s here to stay.
A lot has changed since that first issue hit the newsstands and those first stories landed in your inboxes — but what hasn't is The Scout's commitment to truthful reporting, fearless watchdog work and putting readers first.
This is more than a subscriber count. It’s a reminder that in an era of media consolidation and shrinking newsrooms, a startup newspaper can still make noise — and make a difference.
And in celebration of this milestone, we're giving back to YOU: one lucky subscriber will win a $100 gift card, another will get a Juna Pillow from Juna Sleep Systems, a third will get a $50 Get-N-Go gift card. Jon and Joe are also buying a case of beer for a subscriber - a Beal Distributed product of their choice, some choice meat from Rausch Grass Finished Meat and a $25 gift card to 49th Street Liquor. We're also comping an annual subscription to TheDakotaScout.com!
All paid subscribers are automatically entered. Make sure your subscription is current or become a paid subscriber before May 7 to have a shot at the goods.
