JD Vance parachuted into the Hills for July 4, determined to film enough patriotic B-roll to last three election cycles. He stopped at Mount Rushmore for a quick Facebook video — proof he’d been there, if not for long — then set up shop in the DoubleTree lobby like he was casing the place for a heist: wave at the locals, snag the footage, vanish by Monday. Gov. Larry Rhoden was there too, wearing a ten-gallon hat so oversized it looked like he’d stolen it off a cartoon rancher.
And of course, every parking space within a quarter of a mile was commandeered for the cause. Nothing says “we love small towns” like hogging all the spots and calling it outreach.
