South Dakota’s float took home the Americana Award at the Rose Parade, which means that somewhere between Pasadena and Pierre, Jim Hagen once again made a tourism year look like we won the Powerball. Hagen has been around state government longer than most legislators have been around Pierre, and the man does his homework. He can take the same landmarks we have been selling for decades and convince the rest of the country they are seeing them for the first time.

More importantly, he has a rare talent in state government. He can walk into a budget hearing with a straight face and walk out with people believing tourism is an investment, not a vacation.
