Another school shooting, another bouquet of “thoughts and prayers.” Nice sentiment—zero engineering. If condolences fixed policy, kids wouldn’t be practicing lockdowns between math and lunch. It’s time to pair sympathy with something real — like national red-flag laws. But that takes political courage, and we seem to be running short.

Red-flag laws are simple: if you’re making threats or clearly in crisis, a judge can put your guns in time-out. Not forever, not a government raid — just a pause button. States that use them have fewer funerals. It’s not perfect, but unlike “thoughts and prayers,” it actually does something.
