Steven Michael Kiewel, 77, of Alcester, South Dakota, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
Steve was born on April 10, 1948, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Lawrence and Darlene Kiewel. He graduated from Alcester High School in 1966 and proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1970 as an Engineman, achieving the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. During his service in Vietnam, he was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice.
On June 20, 1970, Steve married Rozann Johnson at Big Springs Baptist Church, where they built a life rooted in love, faith, and family. Steve was not only a skilled diesel mechanic but also a gifted metal artist and woodworker. His creativity and craftsmanship were evident in everything he touched—from the projects he built to the art he created. He will be remembered for his generous heart, steady hands, and the beauty he brought into the world through his work.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rozann Kiewel of Alcester, SD; son, Thad (Reese) Kiewel of Derby, KS; daughters, Kari (Troy) Hemmelrick of Akron, IA, and Traci (Chris) Schurdevin of Akron, IA; grandchildren, Renae, Madison, Levi, Victoria, Mersadie, Lane, Maverick, and Briah; and great-grandchildren, Jace and Addison.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Darlene Kiewel; his brother, Robert D. Kiewel; and his in-laws, Ruth and Lowell Johnson.
A private family interment will be held at Big Springs Baptist Cemetery.
