Steve L. Hendrickson, 78, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Dell Rapids, SD and Door County, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Steven Lyle Hendrickson was born May 24, 1947 to Orville and Ella (Pruest) Hendrickson in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin. He grew up in rural Door County and attended school at Sevastopol High School in Institute. After high school, Steve worked at Wilson Marine Transport for two years, serving as a wiper and oiler for several boats on the Great Lakes.
In 1972, he moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he eventually married. Through this marriage, Steve was blessed with three sons and eventually four grandchildren.
Steve began a 56-year career as an over-the-road truck driver in 1967. In his lifetime Steve logged close to 6-million miles across the United States and Canada without any major accidents or injuries. He took great pride in his abilities as a truck driver and also his equipment, spending many hours ensuring his equipment was running at peak performance. Only ill health at the end of his life ended his truck-driving adventures, of which there were many that he loved to share.
When not working, Steve enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his sons and grandchildren. He loved riding Harley Davison motorcycles and was a member of the Sioux Falls Corvette Club. He was also a fan of westerns (especially anything with John Wayne), John Deere tractors, and of course his Green Bay Packers.
Grateful for sharing Steve’s life are his sons, Matt (Sara) of Huntington, WV, Mike (Katy) of Dell Rapids, and Mark (Jessica) of Dell Rapids. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Zoey, Harper, Miles and Micah Hendrickson; sister, Marcia Hendrickson of Sturgeon Bay, WI; brother-in-law, Steven Schopf of Egg Harbor, WI; sister-in-law, Chris Hendrickson of Algoma, WI; his nephews, Scott Hendrickson, Jeremy Schopf, Brandon Schopf, and Adam Schopf; as well as countless truck-driving friends across the decades.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Viola Hendrickson; his sister, Chloe Schopf; his brother, William; and his good friends, Dick Vaughan, his “Old Buddy Harland”.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Steve at a time to be determined.
