CANTON — The state of South Dakota has purchased an option agreement to buy land in Sioux Falls for a new men’s prison, Gov. Larry Rhoden announced Friday.

The land located off of Benson Road in northeastern Sioux Falls was one of several that a summer task force scouted for a new prison. That group – the Project Prison Restart Task Force – was formed by Rhoden after lawmakers this year failed to approve final funding for a prison in rural Lincoln County south of Harrisburg.

The task force agreed after its first meeting in Springfield that the Dakota Territory-era South Dakota State Penitentiary needed to be replaced.
