South Dakota Health Department issues new fish consumption advisories
Two lakes added to waters where fish found with elevated mercury
The South Dakota Department of Health has issued new fish consumption advisories for 2025 following its annual sampling program, warning anglers to limit consumption of certain species due to elevated mercury levels.
The advisories, developed in partnership with the Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources and Game, Fish & Parks, are based on mercury concentrations found in fish tissue collected across the state. Officials said the mercury is primarily a result of atmospheric deposition from sources outside South Dakota.
“Our commitment to public health and safety drives the annual fish sampling program,” said Health Secretary Melissa Magstadt. “The collaboration between the DOH, DANR, and GFP ensures that South Dakotans have the most up-to-date information regarding fish consumption advisories.”
