Remains found in the Missouri River near Pierre nearly five decades ago have been identified using modern-day DNA technology.

Stephen Boice was found floating in the Missouri River in 1976 east of the state Capitol city. Authorities at the time were unable to identify the man before his body was interred in Pierre’s Riverside Cemetery.

And who the man was remained a mystery until recently when a vigilant South Dakota investigator cracked the case.

That’s according to the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office, which announced Boice’s identity Wednesday.
