Disdain for South Dakota’s top prison official greeted a guided tour of journalists this week at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

“F— Kellie Wasko, F— Kellie Wasko.”

The chants of inmates in the East Hall of “the Hill” – a moniker long attached to the state prison built in Sioux Falls more than 144 years ago – made clear the element of surprise was gone.
