Sioux Falls rail yard development kicks off after decades of plans, dreams
Work began more than 20 years ago to remove BNSF switching yard for downtown project

A downtown development project that took decades in the making kicked off Friday as city officials and business leaders joined for a groundbreaking ceremony.
The Switchyard, located on Eighth Street east of the 8th & Railroad Center, is a 4-acre development with three buildings. The structures include a five-story, 60,000-square-foot mixed-use building with offices and two residential buildings holding an estimated 270 units.
The site also includes a parking ramp and an extension of the bike trail. Retail areas are planned on the first floor of the office space. The residential units are planned to be at market rate.
