The candidates for mayor of Sioux Falls are turning to familiar faces to fund their campaigns.

Their family.

While the channels vary, three of the hopefuls are drawing on their immediate relatives to raise significant amounts of money, according to documents filed last week with the City Clerk’s office.

Christine Erickson, Greg Jamison and Joe Batcheller each report thousands of dollars in donations from immediate family members, which are not restrained by the limits placed on other donors.

It’s not a new or illegal source of funding, but observers note that a competitive race and a crowded ballot – due to a state-mandated merging with partisan primaries – is likely squeezing resources for the five candidates who want to be the next mayor of Sioux Falls.
