New radios used by first responders in Sioux Falls can tap into wireless networks at hotels, hospitals,
schools and other large buildings during emergencies.
New hospitals, schools and other large buildings in Sioux Falls could avoid the six-figure cost of installing specialized radio equipment under a proposed change to the city’s fire code.
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Fire Marshal Ric Seward told City Council members Tuesday that the city is proposing to allow certain buildings with poor radio coverage to use cellular and Wi-Fi technology to maintain public safety communications rather than requiring the installation of a hardwired bi-directional antenna system, commonly known as a BDA.
The change would apply to properties where traditional radio signals used by police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel are hindered by the building’s construction.
