Shirley Hanisch, 83, of Humboldt, SD passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at her home with care from her daughter and hospice against cancer. A celebration of life will be held at the Humboldt Main St. Bar on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at 1 pm.
Shirley Jensen was born August 21, 1942 in Grundy Center, IA to Arthur and Elsie (Eichmeyer) Jensen. She attended and graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls and on September 30, 1961 she married Sylvester "Bugs" Hanisch. They made their home in Humboldt, SD where she lived until her passing.
Shirley worked for Ravens Industries. While at Ravens she made parachutes used in Vietnam and also a balloon that was in the movie Escape from Alcatraz.
Shirley was an avid fan and owner of the Green Bay Packers. She enjoyed collecting cookbooks and had accumulated over 5000. She spent many hours snowmobiling and was a founding member of the Humboldt Snowmobile Club. She loved fishing in the Humboldt Walleye Classic as well as camping. Her favorite thing to do was spend time with family, especially her grandkids.
Shirley is survived by: her husband, Sylvester "Bugs" of Humboldt; daughter, Sarah of Humboldt; grandchildren, Nate and Payton; sister, Mary
Fleiner of Oshkosh, WI and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 daughters, Cindy, Christy, Dawn and Becky,
brothers, Wayne and Vernon and a sister, Doris.
