SCOUTING YESTERDAY | State cement plant sale ends South Dakota’s public enterprise era
This week in South Dakota history: Dec. 26-Jan. 2
After dabbling in insurance and fuel sales, and trying its hand at operating grain elevators and flour mills in the early twentieth century, South Dakota’s experiment with socialism came to an end 25 years ago.
After South Dakota established Dacotah Cement four scores earlier, the state Legislature signed off on the $252 million sale of the state-owned plant during an emergency gathering on Dec. 28 and 29, 2000, according to the Jan. 2, 2001, edition of the Argus Leader.
