
Good fences make good neighbors, but 50 years ago this week, a meandering Missouri River put South Dakota and Nebraska at odds in the United States Supreme Court, both claiming possession of a 1,000 acre island on the border near Yankton.
At issue was a piece of land known as Rush Island, sitting north of the Missouri River’s main channel but long claimed as part of Cedar County, Neb., according to the Oct. 4, 1976, edition of the Mitchell Republic.
