The rivalry between the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits and the University of South Dakota Coyotes was left unsettled after both schools scored 17 points, ending USD’s 60th Dakota Days homecoming football game in a tie, according to the Oct. 25, 1976, edition of the Mitchell Republic.

It was the last time the state rivalry ended in a tie. Of the 118 or 119 games the two teams have played, seven have ended that way.

The first football game between the two state schools was played in Sioux Falls on May 3, 1889, during a two-day series of events including baseball, a track meet and an oratorical contest, according to the Argus Leader. Travelling by horse, it took the Brookings competitors two days to reach Sioux Falls.
