South Dakota’s full-size replica of the Liberty Bell began a tour of the state 75 years ago this week, according to the June 8, 1950, edition of The Sioux Valley News. The bell was one of 55 presented to each state and territory from the United States Treasury Department to promote the Independence Savings Bond Drive.

President Harry S. Truman introduced the idea of the bond drive during a 1950 radio broadcast, in which he explained the continued need for post-World War II military spending to preserve world peace.
