Rapid City celebrates its sesquicentennial this week. But in the Black Hills community’s earliest years, its sustained existence had been anything but certain.

Founded on Feb. 25, 1876, the town nearly disappeared before becoming South Dakota’s second-largest city and the Gateway to the Black Hills.
