Residents of Miller and Faulkton reported an earthquake 125 years ago this week, according to The Madison Daily Leader. They felt the ground shaking and heard the sounds of their walls cracking during the seismic event that hit on the morning of Dec. 6, 1899, according to officials with the South Dakota Geological Survey.

The agency listed the event as a IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale — a measurement of a quake’s intensity based on observations, ranging on a scale of I-XII.
