April 16, 1973: Rapid City Journal.

Parents received an alarming, although not entirely unexpected, letter sent home with students of Douglas School District at Ellsworth Air Force Base on Friday, April 13, 1973.  

According to the Rapid City Journal, Superintendent Dr. Eldon Garn wrote, “It was previously announced that by borrowing money the Douglas School District could continue operation through May 18. Legislation dealing with funding upon which to base any such loan has not materialized. The district therefore finds it necessary to suspend school until further notice…”
