Queen City Mail readers were reminded of the extraordinary life of one of the regions earliest Black Hills’ settlers a century ago of this week.

The tribute sent to the newspaper by a personal friend of Lucretia Marchbanks and published Jan. 13, 1926, recalled the former slave’s no-nonsense, motherly influence on some of the most legendary figures of the old west.
