The Yankton Savings Bank shut its doors following a bank run 125 years ago this week as it became yet another victim of a scam perpetrated by the Yankton County Treasurer, according to The Madison Daily Leader.
Suspicion of treasurer A.W. Peterson arose after he left town for Gayville days earlier, did not arrive as scheduled and failed to return home. It was soon discovered that he had misused between $15,000-20,000 worth of county bonds — more than $650,000 in today’s dollars.
