Five men escaped from the Charles Mix County Jail 50 years ago this week, just months after they were arrested for an armed takeover of a pork processing plant on the Yankton Sioux Reservation.

Four of them were back in custody three days later.

Their story began with a protest, a broken promise of economic opportunity and a growing Native American rights movement that would collide with a rising political force in South Dakota: Attorney General Bill Janklow.
