SCOUTING REPORT | Shearing sheep, runners against suicide, remembering S.D. MIAs

Besides being tasty, sheep have the added benefit of providing humankind with wool. And now the South Dakota State University Research and Teaching Unit in Brookings will be offering a sheep shearing school. The classes will take place Oct. 12-14 and are taught by professional sheep shearers.
Participants will get hands-on training in safely handling animals, maintaining equipment, wool quality and how to manage a shearing business. The class is $200. Lest you think that is a lot of money, sheep shearing is a coveted skill that pays good money.
Jaelyn Whaley, an SDSU Extension sheep field specialist, said the class is a great opportunity to learn from world-class professionals.
“They really are learning from the best,” she said.
