Immediately after winning one of the most coveted national titles in speech and debate this summer, Beneyam Hassen went to work. The 2024 Jefferson High School graduate won the William Woods Tate, Jr. National Student of the Year award from the National Debate & Speech Association in Des Moines. The next day, he started summer classes at Williams College in Massachusetts where he is studying political science. He hopes to go to law school.

Hassen’s achievement was recognized by the Sioux Falls School Board on Aug. 12 when he was back in Sioux Falls for a brief visit before he returns to New England.

“It’s been a grueling summer,” he admitted.
