South Dakota has joined more than 30 other states in reporting a parasitic infection that causes explosive diarrhea. But it’s unclear if South Dakota’s cyclosporiasis infections are linked to the wider outbreak. The epicenter of the outbreak is Michigan.
Thousands of cases of the gut busting parasite have been reported to state health officials across much of the country, but the true number is thought to be much higher because people with milder cases stay close to their bathrooms and don’t necessarily seek out medical help.
The parasite is transmitted through contaminated vegetables, fruits and drinking water.
