Scouting Hollywood: March 16-22
A roundup of news, gossip and history of the entertainment business brought to you from Hollywood, Calif.
MGM’s Creed III hit gold over its opening weekend, landing in first place and raking in $56 million for the Amazon-owned studio. It was the biggest opening haul for the series, as well as the most ever for a Hollywood sports film, not adjusted for inflation. This should help goose Amazon into a renewed commitment to theatrical release of features as opposed to direct-to-streaming. MGM has announced that the upcoming Air feature starring Matt Damon will debut in theaters in early April. As opposed to the limited releases Netflix has done, Amazon is also disclosing the gross box-office from their releases. Creed’s victory was short lived, as Scream VI took the crown a week later with $44.5 million as Creed III fell to second.
