When Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders made Steve Zakuani its first draft pick in club history in 2009, Zakuani had a promising career as a professional athlete ahead of him.

The Sounders, a new club in MLS, used the first overall pick in the draft on Zakuani, who had led the nation in college scoring in 2008 as a sophomore at the University of Akron. His 20-goal campaign that year earned him a runner-up accolade for the Hermann Award, college soccer’s most prestigious individual athletic trophy.

But like many promising professional athletes, Zakuani’s career was cut short by injury. While he found that professional organizations were good at helping athletes recover physically from injury, they weren’t as prepared to deal with the mental challenges of recovery.
