Illegal immigrant gets prison time for attempted sex with a minor in Sioux Falls
The implication of what’s to come in U.S. immigration policy played out in a Sioux Falls courtroom Monday morning, with the sentencing of an illegal immigrant charged with soliciting sex from a minor girl.
Shortly before sentencing Gerber David Santos Gonzalez, U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Piersol questioned whether Gonzalez would serve out his full prison term before being deported, or whether he would be deported during the course of his sentence. Piersol noted that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had placed a detention hold on Gonzalez, who entered the United States illegally from Guatemala.
“We have a change in administration,” Piersol said. “There’s talk the incoming administration is going to deport a lot of people.”
