Public school unions under fire at South Dakota Capitol
Legislators gunning for compelled membership in education labor organizations; other restrictions on public funds for union activities proposed
PIERRE — Public union critics have South Dakota’s education lobby on the ropes as a measure aiming to prohibit compelled labor union membership gains traction at the state Capitol.
South Dakota’s House Education Committee voted 8-7 Wednesday to prohibit public schools from using taxpayer funds to support labor unions, including deducting dues from teacher paychecks or providing paid leave for union activities.
