Better-than-expected revenues could ease state budget squeeze
Updated projections could bring funding boosts for state employees, schools and health care partners
PIERRE — State employees, public school teachers and state healthcare partners in South Dakota could see a bump in their allotment of the Legislature’s budget.
Updated revenue projections by state economists under oversight of the governor’s office as well as the state Legislature are forecasting tens of millions more than previously anticipated when Gov. Larry Rhoden first unveiled his proposed spending plan for the 2026 fiscal year. And on Wednesday evening at the state Capitol, lawmakers on the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Appropriations added nearly $50 million to the overall budget target this year’s Legislature will work toward.
